This
site was created by the family of the late Captain Jack Broome D.S.C. to
share the wealth of naval and personal information left by this remarkable
man. John Egerton Broome was born in Seattle, Washington in 1901. When he entered the Royal Navy as a Midshipman during World War 1, he had already travelled extensively with his family. He served in submarines between the World Wars. In 1942, he was the commander of the escort on the infamous North Atlantic Convoy PQ17. The conduct of this convoy became the subject of a renowned libel case heard in the High Court in 1968. After his retirement from the Navy in 1947, he became a magazine editor, film director, writer and illustrator. His final years were spent at his idyllic cottage near Henley-on-Thames, England where he died in April 1985. |
